AFRICAN AMERICAN PROGRAM 30TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OPENING WEEKEND
For the past 30 years, Colonial Williamsburg has recognized the historic struggles and triumphs of African Americans by telling their stories to our guests. On April 4–5, come and experience a sampling of the commemorative events that will take place throughout 2009. To learn more about this and other special programs throughout the year.
MAKE PLANS NOW FOR
DRUMMER’S CALL
May 15–17
Drum roll, please! The Fifes and Drums will be joined by other musical units from across the country in Market Square for a Military Tattoo. Drummer’s Call is a weekend-long event that should not be missed. Regimental music will be performed in military fashion. Learn of the significance of the fife and drum on the battlefield as your ears absorb the melodies and cadences that take you back in time.
GARDEN SYMPOSIUM
The 63rd Garden Symposium is almost here. On May 1, this popular program will feature renowned gardeners, authors, and professional horticulturists who will focus their informative and entertaining lectures on 2009’s topic, “The Natural Rhythm of Gardening.”
AT NIGHT
Experience one of our newest Evening Programs at the Kimball Theatre, Polly Honeycombe. Enacting scenes from her beloved books, young Polly outwits her parents to avoid an arranged marriage and find the man of her literary dreams in this classic farce of mistaken identities and surprise revelations!
TEEN TAKES
For teens, ’tweens, or just the young-at-heart, the Colonial Williamsburg’s art museums present Teen Takes, an hour-long entertaining look to some of the pieces housed in the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum and the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum. Written by teens and for teens, this tour certainly delivers a new perspective on our collections.
KIMBALL THEATRE
Blane Entertainment presents The Rat Pack: A Tribute to Frank, Dean, and Sammy with Special Guest Marilyn Monroe
Friday, April 24 and Saturday, Apr. 25 at 8 p.m.; Sunday, April 26 at 3 p.m. All seats $30
This must-see tribute re-creates the image and sounds of Frank, Dean, and Sammy in a first-class production that has been rated as one of the top shows in America. Also, as an extra added attraction, one of the world’s most beautiful and legendary sweethearts, the fabulous Marilyn Monroe.
DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation just added an inspiring antique to its collection? On March 28, 2009, a bronze Virginia Indian peace medal was added to the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum’s collection. Produced by order of Gov. Thomas Jefferson, this two and one-half-ounce medal commemorates the alliance between the Commonwealth and nonnative recipients. Silver medals were given to important native tribal leaders, but none survive. One side of this medal has one of the earliest depictions of the Virginia seal-the goddess Virtue, standing over a tyrant, presumably King George III. The reverse has the inscription “Happy While United” arched above a scene of a European American and a Native American seated on a bench, sharing the ceremonial peace pipe. We are very excited about this rare piece that demonstrates the early coexistence of indigenous and “foreign” people, who through the years, became one group of Americans.
